1. What's wrong with the Chiefs?
With so many obvious weaknesses being attacked by opponents on a weekly basis, it has been very difficult for the Chiefs to amount any sustained success on either side of the ball.
Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo's tends to operate around the theme of getting quarterbacks out of their comfort zone. A lot of pre-snap movement to disguise blitzes and coverages aka "window dressing." Problem with that is now teams have figured out that behind a lot of that window dressing is not a window but rather a gaping hole for them to walk right through. A defense that is ranked in the bottom 5 in nearly every single defensive statistical category is infectious. As a result, other phases of the team have become infected. The Chiefs are uncharacteristically dead last in turnovers. Patrick Mahomes is on pace to turn the ball over more times in this season then he has the last two seasons combined.
2. What can the Kansas City Chiefs do this season to fix their issues?
If you go back to their overtime loss in the 2018 AFC championship game versus the New England Patriots it was clear that their explosive offense was being held back by their porous defense. That offseason, there was a commitment made by the front office to do what was necessary to get the Chiefs over the playoff hump and into the Super Bowl.
If you were to ask any Chiefs fan after that heartbreaking loss if the team had a chance to go all-in for one chance to win the Super Bowl for the first time in 50 years and deal with the consequences down the road, you're almost certain to find an overwhelming majority who would scream for the front office to jump at that chance. Well now we're down the road and that road is cluttered with junk. Overpriced, inadequate parts.
So what can the Kansas City Chiefs do this season to fix their issues? The answer to this question is: not much if anything. What we're witnessing this season is not about what they are or aren't doing. This is who they are.
