As previously discussed, Michael Jordan, the was the first phone call that was made, formally inviting him to be a member of the United States Olympic basketball team. Now it's time to start putting some pieces around him
Second Call ☎️: Magic Johnson
A 5x champion, 11x All-Star, 9x NBA First Team, and 3x league MVP, Magic Johnson clearly is the most decorated point guard in NBA history. Standing at 6'9, his passing abilities and leadership as a floor general for the Showtime Lakers of the 1980s, the most decorated franchise of the decade, are second to none.
Despite being on the "wrong" side of age 30, Magic put up typical Magic Johnson stats, leading the Lakers to the 1991 NBA Finals, where they would eventually fall to the Chicago Bulls in 5 games. Despite coming up short in the Finals, Magic is still arguably in the discussion for best player in the league.
Selling Point:
Magic, this team could use some of your charisma and leadership in vaulting the U.S. back to the top in international basketball competition. You were a state champion in high school, a national champion in college, and an NBA champion as a pro. But you've never had the opportunity to represent your country in Olympic competition. That gold medal is the only thing missing from your resumé. With all due respect to other contributors, it was the Lakers/Celtics Rivalry of the 1980s that took the NBA to heights unseen previously. Speaking of Lakers/Celtics, there's another phone call that must be made next.
